A new journey began for me late last year after 22 years spent pursuing a career in advertising and technology. It started with a pause after I moved to Bali to reflect on my past and also to ponder what I wanted and needed to do in order to enrich my life. Ubud, where I now live, provided an ideal environment in which to contemplate and to seek some answers.
I immersed myself in the cultural diversity of Indonesia’s vast archipelago and slowly I came to realize that within this diversity, and from the 17,000 islands which comprise this great nation, there is a role for me to play. Not to write, nor to screen, but to bring Indonesia’s heritage in tangible forms to be enjoyed and appreciated by the outside world. There is an industry here of little-known craftsmen, living in remote villages, who continue to make with their hands objects that are of importance to them, to their daily lives. Objects of significance at birth of a new child, at death of a dearly departed, at marriage of a beloved relative, or at religious ceremonies which mark the calendar year. I want to introduce them in a way in which this cultural heritage can be seen and appreciated through modern artefacts. I also want to introduce the dexterity of their workmanship with modern Western items made from their skilled hands.

This desire of mine requires collaboration with village communities, to identify and then to work with those who have these skilled hands. I am passionate about sustaining an economy no matter how small or rustic it may be. I introduce ideas and designs, but I also value traditional tribal customs. I want to fuse modernity with local tradition, and above all, I want the hands which make these objects to express their skill.
The rural craft of wire weaving is intimately linked to village customs. I want to introduce this painstaking and intricate skill with a line of tribal jewelry and modern handbags. Delicate rings of steel wire are individually woven together by hand to make these objects. It takes days of patient work before such an object is completed, and presented with pride.
What I have learned and greatly admired from working with these village artisans is their community spirit. They are proud of who they are and from where they come from. Their skill is a tribal skill, passed down generations within a small community.
I want to work with these communities with a fairness in mind. I do not want this craftsmanship ever to die. I see myself in a role of helping them preserve their skills and to help their welfare by introducing their wares in a beneficial way. It is a celebration of Indonesian cultural heritage that I seek in this humble undertaking of mine.
